Good afternoon all,
As some of you may be aware, there has recently been another tragic incident in which a teenager sadly lost their life after getting into difficulty whilst swimming in open water. With the recent heatwave, many people will be looking for ways to cool down. For younger people in particular, lakes, reservoirs, rivers and other open-water locations may seem like an attractive option. However, what may appear to be a safe and refreshing place to swim can often hide significant dangers.
Even during hot weather, open water can remain very cold. The RNLI advises that water below 15°C is cold enough to trigger cold water shock, which can cause an involuntary gasp response, rapid breathing, panic, and difficulty swimming. These effects can occur within seconds of entering the water and can affect even strong swimmers.
Open water can also present other hazards, including: I would strongly encourage anyone considering visiting open water to cool down during the current hot weather to stop and think: Is it really worth the risk?
There are many safer alternatives available, including supervised swimming facilities and leisure centres, where trained staff and safety measures are in place. Please take a moment to speak with your children, family members and friends about the dangers of open water. Raising awareness and making informed decisions could help prevent further tragedies.
Stay safe, look out for one another, and enjoy the sunshine responsibly.
